We’re at Wootton. They provide uniforms (no backpacks or fancy stuff) and we buy socks and a team shirt to wear before games. The uniform is on loan and returned at the end of the season.

My JV kid got a backpack and uniforms on Friday. This was how he found out he made it.

DC's school is one of the ones where they could have formed 6 full teams and then had leftover kids, seniors and juniors who did not make varsity could not get spots on JV. Rough.

If you try out for varsity and don't make it are you automatically considered for JV if you are sophomore or are you just cut? Does it vary by school. I realize this is a question for the coach and something we should have asked earlier in the process.

I think it depends but for a Sophomore most likely they'd be put on JV. For Juniors, sometimes the pick the younger player because they have more time to develop (if there is only room for 1 player).

Good luck to your child! Mine made it against steep odds!

Mine said they cut seniors. Juniors were sent to JV while a bunch of sophomores made varsity. He wasn’t aware of any juniors who were cut who had played last year and were returning. But freshman were cut to allow for space.

My son went to JV tryout and was sent to varsity along with a few kids. When it was over today, it sounded like the kids who didn’t make varsity were given spots on JV, including juniors.

That's so hard. I'm sorry for the kids who went through that and good luck to your child.

Thank you. We are trying to be hopeful but realistic. Many more cuts today. People at the school have said it's very very hard to get on any team and others have said it's easy. I tend to think the later don't know what they are talking about or are trying to be positive (which isn't helpful for kids who aren't Allstars).

Good luck to all the kids!

Keep in mind that most schools have at least one no-cut sport. Often that’s the case with XC in the Fall.

Sounds like our school is waiting to Friday to do cuts. There were about 3 kids for every spot, but that includes the rising sophomores who were on the team last year, who presumable have an advantage. (Taking them out, it’s probably more like 6 kids for every spot.). I think they basically were all kids who do travel at some level.

Our school holds them in the evenings so today hasn’t happened yet. My son said fewer students showed up than he would have expected. It sounded like they had about twice as many as they will roster. Nothing like the numbers I’ve heard at other schools. As a matter-of-fact, he is worried about the ability of his team to be competitive if other schools have double the pool of players to select from (though he only knows of one non-travel player trying out). I don’t believe they did any cuts on day 1 but they will definitely have cuts today.

Are you serious that 120+ try out? I know that’s one of the more popular sports here but wow.

Why is that a surprise. These schools have 2000+ kids?

I went to a smaller HS and there were no tryouts: everyone who wanted to be on the team could be on it. But I see this is almost impossible if there are over a hundred students wanting to join. That’s unfortunate.

We’re you unaware how many kids are in the school?
