Get use to listening to this and just nodding or say No now because this is not going to end and you are forever going to be trying to keep up with trends that your family may not be able to afford. As other have said you can buy some things for special occasions or when there are discounts. Others you are just going to have to let go. As for skincare products l, it’s better to get her to invest in things that are actually good for her skin and not just something trendy. Get her a Lush, Sephora, Ulta giftcard and let her pick what she wants and after that suggest she get a job.

Like Drunk Elephant -- this is about being able to say it's what she uses. She doesn't actually "need" it and don't go out and by a $100 serum. Get something like this as gift for a special occasion (the occasion can be starting at a new school):

Tell her this is it for the year -- you are not buying full size bottle and you aren't replenishing this unless she asks for it again for Christmas/Hannukah or a birthday. So she can use small amounts if she wants to experiment, and she can tell her friends she has Drunk Elephant, whatever.

Same with Lululemon. You can get stuff on Poshmark or you can shop their "We Made Too Much Sales" to get her a couple things. If she wants specific full price items in specific colors, she needs to ask for it for a birthday or holiday and it is not a gift on top of what else she might get -- it's one of her big-ticket gifts.

Or you can say no and explain that this is not part of the family's value system to spend money on these things and if she wants them, she needs to ask grandma or save up birthday money or get a summer job or something.

You need to figure out what matters to you and then go from there. But you aren't required to spend $800 on skincare and athleisure for your teenage daughter just because some girls at school were bragging about it. If you go that route, you're screwed because it's just going to be one thing after another.

Where's a good marketplace to buy empty containers of luxury consumables?

Or is it worth the long term investment buy one of each?

There is a Lululemon outlet I believe on route 50 just passed the bay bridge and then also at the beach. I’m not sure what drunk elephant is.

If your kid wears uniforms, you’re probably in a better position. My kids school doesn’t have uniforms, but the students have a dress code, and can only wear athletic clothes on Fridays and sports practices.

DD started a new school during the pandemic and she was sporting colorful Nike Tempo shorts and Aerie leggings , but soon picked up on that everyone else was wearing LL. I initially thought the shorts were too much, but I understand how important it is to feel like you belong – especially for a teenager, starting a new private school as well.

She started with one black pair of the hottie hot shorts and for the actual leggings you can get dupes of. At the time my kid preferred what she had . Most kids wear the align and You cannot even see the logo. She likes the flare, because they are long, but LL alters them for no additional charge.

Dd and I just had a conversation about how she wanted to spend her back to school budget. She wanted another tshirt. she could buy one $70 LL T-shirt or 3 others for $25 each. And we talked about how the LL T-shirt made her feel and how she likes the quality And the fact that it was “cool” and she’d probably wear it 10 times as much as the $20 shirts. She splurged for another one.

My DD is very logical and conservative. She would only buy solid, neutral colors in shorts and leggings but for the shirts she is open to the seasonal colors. She is convinced that it’s going to go out of style, and she would not wear later in life. I actually disagree. lululemon is pretty good high-quality and they have a great sales model.

I have a daughter in an elite private HS and have never heard of drunk elephant. Lululemon yea and she has a few bras and shorts.

So THIS is all they talked about at shadow day? And you’re still sending her there? What school is this, Holy Child?

My dd just graduated from a private school and I doubt she knows what Drunk Elephant products are. She’s worn a uniform through lower, middle and high school. She does have lululemon but doesn’t wear to school.

If you want to buy some Drunk Elephant products as a special gift for birthday/holidays, try to pick up the variety packs they sell at Sephora. You get more bang for your buck and it's usually sold as one full size product with smaller travel sizes. And make it clear that this is expensive and if they want to continue to use it they should get a job and/or do chores to earn money for more in the future.

I don’t understand. Why not just let the kid feel the disappointment in not being able to afford the stuff. It truly doesn’t matter- that is the lesson you should be teaching her! And if she is not liked because of it- oh well, those aren’t great ppl to begin with.

My husband took our public school daughter and her public school friends—in, get this, FLYOVER COUNTRY, shopping and they went into Ulta. Friend spent over $100 on Drunk Elephant products. Her mom took it right back to the store the next day. I refuse to buy any—that stuff is for adult women, not tweens with normal skin. I use Cerave from Costco, they can too, unless they need something prescribed by a dermatologist.

There are Lululemon outlets but most of the merchandise there is there for a reason—weird colors or extreme sizes that didn’t sell. We’ve had some luck at resale shops.
