OP, I tried Care.com and found a great caregiver for $20/hr for cooking, light housekeeping, laundry and general help around the house. She was great until she could no longer do the work because her own FIL was ill. She recommended another person who was also great for a while (and was closer in age to my parents) but she fell and broke her knee and that was the end of that. I’ve also used agencies who sometimes send good people and sometimes send people who are so so. The agencies are around $35 for minimum 4 hours. Agencies can be a revolving door but at least you have back up of a caregiver is sick or quits.

It’s very hard to find and keep good help. It takes up a lot of your time and you can’t always get the right amount and level of help because elderly needs are complex and ever changing. They also might need help or have an emergency when the caregiver isn’t there.

I eventually moved my parents to an assisted living facility because once they need care, they start needing more and more with each passing month. It was peace of mind for me and more socialization for them. If I had to pay for 24 (or even 12 hours) of care to make sure they are ok, it would cost $25,000/month. AL is $12,000 and if your parents have long term care insurance, they would qualify for reimbursements and the facility can help you with the paperwork.

I prefer someone who has experience working with the elderly and possibly some nursing background, but is more of a home helper. The elderly parent who needs more of a nursing type of professional is in mid-80s and has a heart condition, also mild cognitive decline.

Is it best to go through an agency? Does anyone know what the hourly going rates are?

Also, are there vetted places where one can post to find people looking for these kinds of jobs?

The only thing about going through the staffing agency is that I think it may be more expensive and also they only want to book people for 4 hour minimum blocks of time, which isn't always necessary unless that person is also doing other home tasks (see above).

Any resources are appreciated.

I posted on FB and in my group texts.

I paid $100 for 3 hours plus lunch.

I got friends, friends of friends, friends younger Moms, bored SAHM empty nesters.

For nursing I paid $35 for bath, etc.
I paid $50/hr for medication

I used Interim for the nursing and medication.
