I think our team was $180 per swimmer this year, maybe $150. It includes a shirt and team cap. Banquet -- catered, at the pool -- is $25 for adults and something like $15 for kids 11 and younger.

Pasta parties are potlock and spirit stuff is pretty much BYO, tho people definitely share. Team supplies the chalk for the sidewalks and cars!

Our team is run by the club, so it’s not like it has to pay for lane times. It definitely subsidizes the costs of our facility. We’re one of the $250 clubs. We have a bit more than 100 swimmers so that’s $25000/year from swim team. We rent out lanes to USA Swimming clubs year-round, mostly in fall/winter/spring and that brings in far less per swimmer.

I think you’re asking “does swim team use more than their fair share of club resources” and that’s a subjective question depending on who you are and how you use your club.

My question was more if any of your team dues were paid to the pool for any reason such as to pay lifeguards or pool maintenance. Or conversely, I have heard of some pool’s underwriting the team banquet or subsidizing coaching salaries.

Yes, after they pay the coaches and pay for ribbons, printer ink, new stopwatches and team t-shirts, anything that is left of that $25,000 goes straight to the club’s main budget. It’s not like they have separate shelves in the pump room that says “chemicals just for swim team” and “chemicals for the rest of the day.”

What about pasta dinners, spirit stuff for meets, all star swim caps, team breakfasts, etc? We spend a lot more than $25k every year, though we do have 200 swimmers.

Our Pasta Dinner is a potluck, they don't give out spirit stuff except to the team rep's kids and their friends, no all star swim caps or breakfasts. Not sure where all of our money goes as we only have one coach.

Are you saying kids of your team reps get spirit wear for free? How would you even know that? Sounds like you need to volunteer more as you clearly don’t know how these things work…

Team breakfasts are purchased by volunteers, and parents buy caps for the season- they are $15 for 2 with kids’ names on them. We are not in NVSL/MCSL so no separate all-stars stuff. We don’t go crazy with spirit stuff but parents bring things for certain meets as a volunteer job. We are spending WAY less than $25k- that’s our gross revenue!

Dinners and breakfasts for our team are all signup/potluck; spirit stuff for meets is all BYO; clothing beyond team T-shirts is fundraising; and we're not high enough up the division pecking order to go broke on all-star caps (haha!)--each kid just gets one for their first-ever all-star time, not every season as far as I know. We're kind of a cheap date! But it works for us.

Regarding revenue, not swim team related. Our pool rents out to a local camp 2x a week for them to come on a field trip and swim. It only overlaps with opening time by an hour. It’s a win for the camp and a financial win for the pool although I don’t know how much they pay.

$125 if I remember correctly to join the team.
Includes a tshirt.
Banquet is off site at a private school but I’m told we got a deal because pool members go there. Banquet was $15 for anyone over 10. Can’t remember price for under 10.
We chip in for coaches gift at end of season

I think our team subsidizes the pool rather than the other way around (but I'm not on the board, so not completely sure). I'd be totally fine with that. The team seems to have everything it needs, and if it didn't the families would just pitch in: the general support is phenomenal. Something like 1/4 to 1/3 of the pool membership is involved with the team anyway.

Where things get interesting from my perspective is that we are a small pool with limited facility capacity. I'm not sure we can expand anything, which means that in order to grow revenue we would need to change our financial model.

Why would the swim team pay for this? The family has to be a member of the pool to be on the swim team (and pay dues). Pool dues pay for the life guards and space.

If anything our pool makes a killing off the swim team. We have many families who join only for the swim team and barely use the pool outside of team activities. It's like free money for the pool.

I feel the same way but have heard board members say we should pay $$ back to the pool for meets when pool is closed to membership

I did the math on this at our pool. Back of the envelope the pool makes easily $30,000 off of memberships from swim team families that wouldn't join the pool without the team. In return the pool opens a couple of hours late for 2 or 3 A meets a year and closes early for 2 B meets on a weekday. The pool would be paying the lifeguards during the B meets anyway. So the pool pays for 2 lifeguards for 4 hours 2 or 3 times a year. I'm guessing the guards aren't making more than $25 an hour? So grand total of $600. If your pool is like ours it would be very foolish to ask the swim team to pay for space and guard fees.

You would be amazed at what the board asks of our team…
