I don't think the FBI has the authority to tell private citizens that they can't make up lies and spread them around the internet. That's 1A. I think it's really despicable that the former intelligence officers did that, but they were within their legal rights and the FBI wouldn't have the authority to stop them. Let them circulate the letter and show how ignorant they are. But, the FBI should have absolutely made a statement that the letter was not accurate.

Yeah. That's their job- to determine if there are crimes. It's not job to serve as Twitters fact-checkers.

I think it's fine if the FBI alerts social media companies of known foreign influence campaigns. It's not fine for the FBI to learn about people's lives and verify information about their lives to social media companies. If you really think it through, the FBI handled that interaction completely appropriately. "Yes, the laptop is real" -- eg it's not a foreign influence campaign-- "and no further comment." That's perfect IMO.
