I agree that old lady neighbor shouldn't have reached over the fence-but owner OP says she was right there. Why didn't she command her barking, aggressive dog to stop or lay down or whatever? What if a child had reached over the fence?

The dog seems aggressive.

I hear where you are coming from, and I am not a fan of the breeds, but reaching across a fence is dangerous. Dogs are super territorial. It's not a defect; it's their instinct.

It is not okay for a dog to bite an unthreatening old lady. Barking at her, yes... biting, no. I say this as the owner of German Shepherds. I'm feeling very judgy towards these obnoxious high-strung doodle dogs.

Dogs *on their own property, behind a fence!* Plus, the dog was barking at the neighbor, which is a clear sign to leave it alone. It doesn't matter that the neighbor had previously petted the dog. The responsibility for the bite is 100% with the neighbor, not on OP (or the dog). But yes, check on your neighbor's health.


Also,the neighbor reached over the fence. She came at a dog from above who was already barking and growling. None of that was smart. Sometimes dog owners have to be forceful. "No! He does not want you to pet him!"

Op,ask her if she would like a ride to get the wound checked. Next time someone wants to pet, advocate for your dog.

Why do people expect dogs not to bite? That's what they do.

It would be different if the dog climbed the fence and ran after the neighbor in her backyard, but this is not what happened. The neighbor foolishly/naively reached over the fence to pet the dog and got bitten.

Neighbor needs to seek medical care. The bite could become infected.
