I complained to our school because they have been forcing kids to put their first name and last initial on the uniform "for safety."

What? Sorry, stop wasting my money (I have multiple children) and let's use last names - or just rely on the fact they are wearing clothing nobody else will want to wear when determining who's out for PE. Writing any names means that you can't thrift/recycle/etc.

To be more specific, they did football, soccer, basketball, track and field for sure. Those are the ones I heard about.

Our MS is mandating changing this year for PE. I am concerned about trans girls being in the girls locker rooms. Who do I speak to about this?

Not much. I haven’t heard anything about soccer, basketball, and definitely not tennis. Maybe field hockey. Lots of ultimate frisbee. There’s a ton of kids in each class and they work together (think 3 or 4 teachers having PE at once.) so sports that allow for big groups.

I was the poster that said the parents must have older kids. We are at Lake Braddock. My Class of 2023 did the whole uniform thing. My Class of 2026 was offered a uniform for purchase but was told it was not mandatory. Then it was virtual for 7th. Then, probably because of Covid protocols?, he has never been told to change. In the teacher’s defense, he wears basketball shorts and a t shirt every day. For my class of 2029 kid there has been no offer of a pe uniform to purchase.

As for the PE exercise, they do a wide variety of sports and they do their health and FLE in PE. I know high school usually has one quarter for FLE/Health and the rest for exercise because they move to a classroom for health/FLE but I don’t remember if it’s the same in middle or if it’s changed. You know your kid’s schedule best and if more exercise would be appropriate. I think most kids do get some other exercise outside of PE.

Um no, sorry. And my friends with kids in MS last year said the uniforms were still a thing. We're in Fairfax.

I’m the first poster who mentioned having to change and my experience is based off having a rising 8th grader at Irving Middle School and a rising 10th grader. When the high schooler was still at Irving, she brought workout clothes to wear, as she was told she didn’t have to buy the uniform as long as she changed her clothes.

Last year, I didn’t buy the uniform for my then-7th grader based on my older child’s experience but he came home saying that certain PE teachers were insisting they wear the uniform even though the principal said just a change of clothes was required, so we bought it just to keep the teachers off his back.

I believe it was $10 or so for shorts and shirt or maybe $15 total?

NP. My DS is a rising 8th grader. In 7th grade last year, they changed into uniforms. I expect they will this year too, but we'll find out in a month.

The boys changed in the boys locker room and deodorant was strongly strongly strongly encouraged. I don't think any boys showered but I can ask DS. I can't speak to what happened in the girls locker room.
