Optional? I feel like you haven’t met a HS sports coach or a HS teen athlete.
Summer swim is optional. This isn't HS sports. Club teams are still often practicing indoors, or ours is.
There will be Code Orange and Code Red air-quality days during the regular sports season and during the school year, too.

We were outside most of the day yesterday and we are all fine. I don’t want to see outdoor things closed/canceled because of this.
Meaning: you are unable to tell how much it damaged your lungs.
