San Miguel de Allende, Mexico ..colonial city/town in the mountains with a huge ex pat community. Artsy, cute town, fun festivals, clean, really charming. Very safe, not a drunken party spot or resort destination.

Reality is amazing history and art, beautiful architecture, and glorious regional cuisines.

I’ll take it over anywhere in Europe every time.

Oman. I lived in the Middle East for a year (Kuwait- total snoozeville) so we went to Muscat for a long weekend. I had no idea where it was before that trip. Wow! It was a 180 from Kuwait. Extremely clean with beautiful flowers everywhere. I wish we had more time there.

I may get some hate for this but I’m going to say Mexico City. My family could only afford Mexico in terms of Cancun and that’s all I could do internationally. But Mexico City was outstanding. It’s really vibrant and has a rich culture. I wasn’t hurting for good food, history, and people were extremely kind.

Slovenia. We went to Bled and it is gorgeous. The people are so nice. We just wanted to stay and explore the country.

Bayeux, France. Great place as a base in Normandy. We stayed in the loveliest hotel. They had a great breakfast and a pretty garden where we had a glass of wine and charcuterie in the afternoon. And a really memorable dinner in a restaurant near the center of town.

Also, oddly, Frankfurt. I wouldn't recommend it as an actual destination, but if you end up there stay at the Weston on the Zeil and take a walk toward the river. It has a small indoor pool too. The Christmas markets were nice with good food.

Transylvania is like stepping back to the Austro Hungarian empire in 1914. I kid you not. People still pitch haystacks and have horse drawn wagons and the villages have ducks and geese wandering the streets. The fortified churches are very unique. The little cities are so charming without being twee. The food is surprisingly good. The Carpathian mountains are worthy. Then you have the painted monasteries of northern Romania near Moldova. And Bucharest.

We'd been planning on going to Hungary but in doing my research various travel blogs talked about going to Hungary and then crossing over to Romania and were blown away by Romania that they weren't in Hungary, which was what sold me. And Romania exceeded expectations.
