Lands end classmate medium backpack. It’s kind of big for a 1st grader but it has held up really well—been used 2 years so far and looks great still. My older kid had the ll bean junior and the fabric was always getting stuck in the zipper…very annoying. We have also owned pottery barn backpacks and they don’t seem as well made (one of the water bottle pouches tore early on, the buckle that goes across the chest came off right away).

If you are interested in other brands it’s still good to look at these sites because the have recommended rations by age and then you can note the volume and measurements and just look for similar

Make sure they are big enough so that it will zip once library books are in there!
