+1 for UVM, UVA, VA Tech, WI-Madison and CO-Boulder. I also liked the town and schools in Amherst, MA with great views of the Berkshires. While the Duke gardens and forest are nice, I didn't get a "nature vibe" on campus or the surrounding area.

AT goes right through there. New River is amazing.

Ok for nature. But no town to speak of.

Carleton College has an 800-acre arboretum adjacent to campus, with trails for walking, running, and cross-country skiing. The college is walkable to the lovely downtown of a small town (Northfield) and 40 minutes from the Twin Cities.

Duke has some nice nature. It has a Botanical garden on campus and access to hiking/running/biking trails and parks, mountains, streams, and some lakes nearby. They have 8000 acres of forest too.
