We usually do air bnb or get connecting rooms but there are a couple chains, like Home2Suites, that often have two queens and a sofa bed.

Where are you going?

I have 4 kids, and we never had problems finding hotels with rooms that sleep 5 or 6. I never lied--I used their drop down menu to put "2" under adults and "4" under children. Occasionally there'd be a hotel that couldn't accommodate us in one room, but I was always able to find something else. We did tons of road trips, including cross country and back.

You call the hotel and ask if they have a rollaway.

I put in 4 people for my search so I can see all of the options available.

We just stayed in a Hyatt Place last week and I'm pretty sure I only had 2 adults on the reservation but we checked in no problem. We had a room with 2 queens and a pullout couch.

My understanding is part of the restrictions on number of people in a room is a result of fire code. They don't want exits blocked with beds etc. Of course this makes it very expensive for larger families. We used suite hotels, rooms with connecting doors (2 queen or king beds in each room = 4 per room) but having the extra bathroom and bed made a huge difference for the comfort of our family. Some hotels have age limits on what is considered a "person" but if the kids are on the older side..good luck.

When 3rd kid is little up until 6 or 7, they’d sleep with parents or on a small nest on the floor or travel kid blow up bed. In US I always would book for four and all 5 with stay in a room. Overseas, we got two rooms.

When I book online, I say 4 people. It has never ever been an issue.

- do you just list 2 kids when you book? Will I get ‘caught’ with a 5th human in the room, if I booked for 4?
- where do you put your 3rd kid? (We are past the age of pack n plays, etc)

When we stay in driving distance, we bring a foldable cot. This time I am looking at flying, and no cot is an option.

I call the hotel directly and book honestly. The websites like booking.com and hotels.com are the problem. We ask for a roll away cot.

It’s only 4 of us but I put 5 in my search because my opposite sex teens will not sleep in the same bed and my teenage son won’t sleep with either parent (2 moms). So it usually means a suite with 2 queens and a pullout.

I don't think your average hotel will notice or care if you have 3 kids instead of 2. That said, there's really no point in lying since you, presumably, want a room that can accommodate all five of you. Some hotels have a sleeper sofa or can bring in a cot.
Your best bet is going to be something like Residence Inn or any of the "suites" line of hotels that will have more room.

I don't care if others do this - but we need room, so I don't "illegally" book a room for 4 when I really am bringing 5.

I often do vrbo / airbnb or find a hotel that actually takes 5 in a room, or I do adjoining rooms. Sometimes when it says only 4 online - I call and ask if 5 is an option with a rollaway bed - I only do it when they say yes, though.

Airbnb - hotel rooms will always only be so big. Get a bigger space or a hotel room with pull out couch.

A lot of people list 4 people. Hotel folks don’t check.

For a longer stay try an Air bnb so everyone can spread out.
