Have you seen the dorm mattresses?
I think you’re in the minority.

Save your money. They don't want them and won't use them.

This is the correct answer.

They sell the temperpedic toppers at Costco. My kids used these in their dorms.

What material should I look for if DC is in a room with no air conditioning?

The 1.5" topper? I wouldn't have thought that would be thick enough to make a difference... I was actually thinking about buying that one in the king size and folding it in half, but i suspect it would slide all over the place.

The parents on our school's fb page have repeatedly said you really need a 3" topper, since the school -supplied mattresses are basically just vinyl covered blocks.

DS has used this one over the last 2 years and loves it. (Dorm has the navy hard plastic covered mattress) Even bought it for a bed at home.

I agree with the offgassing problem. The only issue for either latex or memory foam toppers, IMO, is how hot your kid sleeps. His pricey mattress topper is now rolled up in storage in our house because it just retains too much body heat. In hindsight, we would have gotten the thinnest one if at all.

My kid thought it was unnecessary when I bought one, but he later told me he was so very glad I did, because the mattress wasn’t super comfortable, even with the topper. YMMV.

We were pretty minimalist with dorm stuff but all my kids agreed the topper was worth it.

My daughter thought it was unnecessary but I ordered it anyway and she says it made all the difference. It feels like sleeping at home instead of camp. My youngest probably wouldn’t care but I’ll get her one. I think some kids probably can sleep on anything.
