Leaf peeping is absolutely a term. Just ask anyone in North GA, Asheville NC, or Gatlinburg TN. They’ll enlighten you pretty quickly, lol.
Hotel rates skyrocket to triple the price during leaf peeping season in some places. It’s an extraordinarily beautiful time of year in the mountains in the southeast.

I mean, we do it, but our kid (now 16) has never liked it.
They were both born that way! Much prefer being outside, hiking, camping etc over seeing a city or going to a museum. We figured they can do museums when they grow up on their own time and dime, if they like being outside and hiking. We will just do that instead and get much more family enjoyment in the process. Go with their strengths.

We still have Columbus Day holiday here. It’s an easy trip to come back Monday afternoon after leaving Friday evening or early Saturday without missing any school.

Just driving around looking at trees didn't do much for our younger kids. When they were teens we rented a place and did a lot of hiking. They enjoyed that much more than us driving around going "wow look at that beautiful tree". It can be crowded and a few years it was just rainy and wet, so the color wasn't as evident. But having an active agenda seemed to fit the needs of our family the best.

Op here. Yes, that is something they do enjoy. They like road tripping, car rides, exploration generally.
Then they would probably like leaf peeping, even if they didn't like the leaves that much.

Mine enjoyed it. Went hiking, visited a farm, had apple cider and apple cider donuts, walked around town, etc. Not their favorite vacation ever, but they like all travel and outdoor activities, so it worked well for a long weekend during the fall.

They are just leaves. I’m 45 and wouldn’t enjoy it for more than 10 seconds. I can’t imagine your kids enjoying this.

Ben and Jerrys factory tour, hike, ferry cross Lake Champlain, pick apples, eat local cheese, sit by a fire. Sounds awesome!
