The school systems were notified by DOE and they were responsible for notifying students. My friends who are teachers applied right away and got funding! My son attends Catholic school so I only found out reading this forum but I applied next day and was quickly approved.

It’s now fairly easy to sign up via outschool and varsity tutors. Sylvan learning and Mathnasium also approved for using grant money and some locations set up special rates and limited time programs not requiring long commitment.

My son has been attending Mathnasium summer program with very good results (and he enjoys going)!

It took me a while to get my tutor approved. Now she is approved and I submitted one invoice for four sessions (hopefully that is fine?). Anyway, I submitted it last week but it has not been approved or anything yet. But I feel bad for my tutor because she is basically not getting paid from me for this entire period. Typically I pay her immediately after the session is over.

This isn’t exactly true. Any grant where any portion of the amount hasn’t been spent by Sept will be returned to VDOE. So if someone has $1,500 and hypothetically spends $0.01 of the grant by September 1st, they can keep the grant for the rest of the year.

Also I wouldn’t be surprised if they change things again. They don’t want to clawback money. What a headache. It would leave little time to redistribute to new grantees and for those new grantees to send money out the door. Really they should’ve just made this a program that reimbursed parents directly and made them submit forms instead of developing a whole middleman system.

Doesn’t seem fair or well advertised. No shock there.

They are already maxed out but you can still put an application in on the off chance there are more funds.

I’ve had a heck of a time using mine. I wanted to use it for OT for my DD with a disability. The soonest I could book an approved provider is October. This program is poorly designed and I wouldn’t be surprised if lots of people who received the funds have trouble using the funds.

They changed the rules again. You now have until September 1 to use "some" of the money. Try to figure out something to get a payment in the system to somebody, You don't have to continue with the same tutor. If you are using it for OT, you might be able to use some of if for assistive tehcnologies or supports.

Some people are even using it to buy ipads.

Yup this is PP and that’s what we are doing. We put in a request to purchase something that should count as assistive technology for $25. This should hopefully allow us to hang onto the money for the rest of the year. Unfortunately even that $25 purchase from an approved assistive tech provider needs to be checked by VDOE and I’m hoping that process doesn’t take like a month otherwise we will be out of luck.

Also look and see if there are any outschool classes your kid my like from the classwallet link. That's another way to use some of it before the september 1 deadline but still preserve the bulk for other services.

I signed up for varsity tutors that way, but I am still waiting for confirmation. I wish Beast Academy/AOPS were options too

It's so frustrating how challenging it has been for everyone who was granted funds to use them. I know of at least two families who were granted one or more and are not using it ... We could have really benefited from it with our daughter especially because tutoring and having to pay out of pocket isn't in the budget right now. Our application was submitted but I guess the funds ran out. I didn't hear about it until someone posted on here. My frustration is fully with the program and how it is set up - happy for everyone who has been able to take advantage, APS families deserve it!

My approach was to e-mail providers we knew and get them to sign themselves up. Quite a long process, unfortunately.
