a 15" Macbook Air runs around $1300. Do they ever go on sale? maybe?
a 16" Lenovo Yoga runs around $800 and often go on sale for around $600.
So I'm not really sure where you are getting this info.

For kids, if one buys an Apple laptop, then get the AppleCare extended support. When, not if, something happens to DC's mac, it will be no hassle to get support or repairs at the Apple Store. Other brands do not seem to have this kind of option or I would also suggest it for them.

Also, for any laptop buy an external backup disk (which stays at home) and have the laptop automatically backup to that disk at least daily.

Last, get and use some kind of anti-virus software - for any laptop. Odds are that will prevent at least one mess before graduation.

Macbook Pro or Air...especially if using other Apple products already (like iphone, etc.). They all work together well.

I'm a mac user, but my kids strongly (and vocally, ha ha) prefer windows based computers. They have had zero problems that PP's project with non-mac laptops. Get what you can afford and something you kid is comfortable using. High school kids do not need much power in the computer. Literally anything will be fine.

I'm not really a fan of Apple for a number of reasons, but the winning feature for Mac laptops is the battery life. They are actually usable for an entire day and then some without needing to be re-charged. If the student actually needs this, then it really is a strong selling point.

The downside is that Apple hardware tends to not be easily or inexpensively repairable, and the current generation of laptops is completely non-upgradable, so you need to make sure that you buy them with the amount of storage and RAM that you will need. Also, the batteries (like all rechargeable batteries) will eventually fail to hold a charge, and they are effectively not user-replaceable parts.

The best PC laptop options would be business-grade models (Lenovo T-series, Dell Latitude 5- and 7-series). These may be good choices if battery life is less of a concern (figure on about six hours or so of use).

This was our experience. The macs last. Something breaks on the windows based laptops after a year and you have to ship it back to get it repaired. Then your kid doesn’t have a laptop, which basically makes homework in HS impossible to get done.

+1 This is a fact...Lenovo has tons of deals and work well. But you can try https://www.backmarket.com/en-us for some really good deals on whatever you buy.

Can someone recommend a Lenovo model that would be equivalent to a MacBook Air M2?

We own several Lenovos and the Yoga 7i is our favorite of the bunch.
