I would have loved having the house to myself for two weeks while my parents traveled I’d they had ever done so while i lived with them.

If you are an adult, you can pay your own way to travel. You seem rather ungrateful.

I'm one of two and we never travelled as kids, unless you count the big ass station wagon with a cheap pop up camper in tow to mindless tiny places within 10 hours of our home. I didn't fly until I went to college as we could not afford to. Plenty of people with only 1 -2 kids who still cannot afford fancy vacations.

They are adults and have a full time job. Do they go away for weekends or vacations without you? If so, there is your answer.

At the same time there are people who just don’t care for travel. Maybe your kids are among them.

I’m the youngest of 3. My parents went to Ireland when I was 17 / still in high school! They asked me whether I wanted to be alone or have someone stay and two weeks alone seemed hard especially to take care of the older dogs. It turns out it was extra hard to manage my sister’s friend’s schedule / the college kid who stayed with me.

After college I lived with my parents for about a year. They definitely traveled without me (Costa Rica as well as closer places).

Then, after I moved to DC and had a “real job” for a year or two I wanted to go to Italy. I figured I’d stay in hostels / do it on the cheap but they were concerned with taut plan and my mom had never been to the areas I was going (my dad had gone as a kid) so they joined my planned trip. It was great! I had their company AND they paid for the hotel rooms and most food. I planned all the logistics and paid for museum tickets and train tickets and made reservations online etc. I’m really glad I had that time with them.

If you want your “kids” to become independent then go away on your own. I think it is borderline abusive to keep them from figuring things out for themselves. I’ve seen families that all stick together for things like vacations after the kids are working f/t and wonder if the parents have a problem with their kids growing up. It also sends a message to your “kids” that they are incompetent. Let them figure out their own vacation. Let them plan when, where, how, who and just be there to answer questions if they ask.

I think you could a combination of both. Maybe see if they like to do a long weekend at the beach/mountains. Do a trip with your husband. Maybe see if they’d like to do a bigger family trip next summer to Spain (using this as an example), they pay their airfare and d expenses, you pay accommodations and food. Something like that. As an adult living at home and not at home, unmarried and married, I always included my mom on a trip a year so I think it’s nice to still do family trips. At the beginning she paid then my husband and I paid.

The beauty of having AC at home? You can travel to your heart's content. Take them on vacations if you can afford it and they have time off. Otherwise forget about them and you go and have fun.
