I assume this thread is specifically about the US but in some foreign countries kidnappings for ransom are much more common.

I work with families in the DC area who recently came from Central and South America. Back in the 90's parents would complain about paying $1000's to bring their kid to the US. Now they are paying $1000's and their kids are just gone. It's happening a lot and it's terrifying. It's also sad that some people are trying to make it out to be a conservative/liberal issue. It's a human issue and I hope it gets more attention.

There is no evidence that the world is safer now than when we were kids? What? How about all the crime stats support this. Actually, violent crime in the US has gradually decreased since the colonial times. The US did see a covid bump but that has also subsided.

I know a woman whose 5 year old was kidnapped and killed. It was a guy she thought was a friend. He even spent time "comforting" her in the week it took to find her child's body.

+1 there is a LOT of fear mongering now but things are actually safer than when we were wandering around.

Random stranger abductions are incredibly rare.
More common pre-2000 for sure.
Custodial kidnappings are on the rise. Most likely because divorce rates are on the rise.

My neighbor works for a state CPS (not in the DMV) and she does see human trafficking in her line of work. The victims are young and largely non-English speaking. By the time she gets them, they sometimes don't even know where they are from anymore. Another neighbor is FBI and he rarely sees real human trafficking even though that's under his portfolio. It appears to skew young with an extremely vulnerable population.
