Let's bring back the Rosslyn island!![]()
Sadly diversity is no longer part of the boundary process. The island was removed because contiguous boundaries looked cleaner on paper. There is probably no chance the Rosslyn island will go back to Williamsburg so that privileged Taylor families can walk to Dorothy Hamm.
I looked at the maps they've proposed. There are people who can literally see Hamm from their house (I even looked it up on street view to confirm) who will be bused to Williamsburg if this passes. I'd be pretty pissed if I were them.
Since the era of public engagement is over, I’d say it’s up to the Taylor families to once again take the initiative and meet with School Board members. Otherwise staff may (at most) just collect some anonymous feedback via an online form prior to coming up with the finalized boundaries.
It’s interesting you reflect back on “the good old days” of privileged white people with the time, access, and comfort level to personally lobby School Board members as the gold standard of public engagement. I understand that’s how things have worked in Arlington for a long time but it sucks and leads to poor decision making.
These draft boundaries result in increased segregation and remove walkable neighborhoods from schools, including homes within view of the school itself. If adopted, I’d say these boundaries are the result of exceptionally poor decision making. That’s inexcusable.
If APS were to bring back public engagement then they would have to work harder to involve all stakeholders, including those who can’t make it to meetings because they don’t have that socio-economic privilege.
Without public engagement, then yes, those parents of privilege will no doubt still advocate on behalf of their neighborhoods. I don’t blame them.

I've heard nothing good about it. No thanks.
I haven’t heard anything good about Swanson lately though.
I'm pp and we're zoned for Hamm
I saw that. It was disappointing how many kids right by Taylor/hamm will now be moved to Williamsburg.
