Declutter and get a good shed in the back for what you really want to keep.

I did the opposite of what you are proposing. Got rid of a storage closet and made it a full bathroom with small shower in the basement. We don't use it much, but it is perfect when we have guests or everyone needs to go at the same time

PP and now agree with others; do not remove your bathroom and instead de clutter and organize your house.

I live in a large 5 BR home but despite the many rooms, the house has very limited storage space. I’ve learned to pare down. Storage has to be organized and labeled and easily accessible but mostly if I don’t use it, I do t store it.

I make weekly trips to the thrift store to donate. Heading there today.

Taking out a bathroom is a bad idea. Is the problem that you have a finished basement space that just has stuff sitting around on the furniture/floor? Why are the storage spaces you have not accessible? I would start by getting rid of stuff you don’t use. I assume at least some of the sporting equipment is outgrown or for a sport no one plays anymore. Does your storage space have shelving or other organization? I’m picturing an under the stairs space that is not fully utilized. After that consider putting in storage shelving on one wall to see if that can contain the stuff.

Do a mass cleanout of the junk in your basement. Make three piles: keep, toss, and donate. For every item you keep, at least five items need to leave the house. I'm sure there is some stuff we can purge, but I'm talking about stuff like Christmas decorations, camping supplies, suitcases, sports equipment... things that we use but not year round.


It sounds like you don't have a garage. Is adding a garage or shed an option? Camping and sports stuff can go there. Possibly Christmas decorations if you protect them really well. That just leaves suitcases in your half bath, which seems fine.

Alternatively, you could have a plumber remove and cap the toilet, and leave the rest of the bath in place and use it as storage without destroying it.

No, do not remove a bathroom. Storage doesn’t have to be easily accessible for stuff you use once a year.
