What are your main places you will be visiting? How many days?
Ferndale or Royal Oak are close-in suburbs that are very central, have good spots to eat. You are going to be driving places anyway (except in rare circumstances), so having a central location for the area is good. But depends on what you are doing to an extent.
We're hoping to visit some museums - art, Motown, Ford Museum, Charles Wright Museum... Probably staying for 3 nights or so.
Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. It's in Dearborn and will probably take a whole day if you do both or the factory tour.
