This book is not always upbeat, but it certainly had a complex main character IMHO.

Richard Russo's books are a good suggestion. I really liked Nobody's Fool.
Pride and Prejudice is an obvious suggestion I suppose.

The Sweet Spot by Amy Poeppel - took me a little bit to get into because several storylines are being set up, but this book is just delightful and such a fun read.
Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon - I like all of her books. Very well written rom coms.
A Rover’s Story by Jasmine Warga - children’s book but I think it might fit your requirements.

Thirding Laurie Colwin. Also loved Nothing to see here and find it uplifting.
In the somewhat sad but ultimately upbeat, I would also add the Hike by Drew Magary and Ghosts by Dolly Alderton.
