Subject: Help me decide what to do with my parents ashes
I would keep some in a small keepsake. Maybe a box, the locket thing, or the diamond. Then I would scatter a bit around in our favorite places as I went. Or maybe just bury them in my yard.

You can turn them into a diamond and then always have a sentimental keepsake. There are a few companies that will do this.

This can cause a clash of cultures. In New Zealand, the Maori do not like ashes being released into waterways, which they regard as sacred. The Hindu community prefers to release ashes into waterways, causing conflict between the two communities.
So be private about it. I'll assume OP is posting from the DMV. Not rubbing it in the face of a Maori shouldn't be too hard.
The point is that what is normal for one culture may be an afront to another culture. The same issue arises here in the US, particularly with tribal lands.
