Wow, a nonurgent text message on any weekend is beyond inappropriate. People use text when they don't want to wait for you to check your email. GTFOOH.

OP PP again- It’s super rude. I had that happen recently on a big Holiday- Christmas Day. I let the person have it when we got back in the office after the holidays.

I think work texts should be limited to when:
*People out of office/customer meetings and may not have a computer (ie conference). Usually it’s check your email for XYZ or let me know when you are available for a talk about XYZ
*Quick turn deadlines- ie if I am working on a bid and finish my part at 9 pm- I’ll send a quick text to whomever is next- so they know it’s available so they can work on it. Everyone has different hours. Maybe someone will see it at work on it at 11 pm or 5 am etc. I know I do this (get up early if I know the piece I was missing is available).

Never on weekends or holidays unless there is an issue that literally can’t wait.

I am a Dad of three kids. Fathers Day is a fake holiday it is not Mothers Day.

I mean we had bagels in morning then around 6pm going to have a BBQ, open a few presents have a slice of cake.

Now Mother’s Day is a different story. That a real holiday you don’t bother mom

Op never said it was a request for info did he/she? Some thing’s are better FYI than email. & in my field, we’re expected to be ‘on’ regularly. Just because it’s Father’s Day or a holiday or weekend doesn’t mean things slow down.

Is it a business phone? If so I think it’s reasonable to send messages whenever is convenient and understand people prob aren’t checking them at 8 am on a Sunday.
I send emails at all times because I work at all times but I don’t expect people to respond to them at all hours. But I think it’s rude to put things in a “hold” pattern for delivery Monday morning. What if they are taking Monday off to take their kids someplace? They may want to work Sunday to get stuff done so they can do that. I expect professionals to manage their work life as they like and I expect admins won’t check their email over the weekend.

Does this person expect you to respond? I have no idea. Maybe they do. And maybe they’re someone who chooses not to regulate and has to externalize every damn thought in their head. They’re afraid of forgetting about it, so they toss it to you in a text, even if it’s on the weekend or after work hours.

Either way, you do not validate this with a response. None. Nothing. Nada. To do so would signal that you are available for any and all future weekend communications. I can’t control when others—colleagues, bosses, etc—send me emails and communications. But I can control when I respond to them.

DO NOT RESPOND If you do you're letting them know they can invade your time off and will continue to do so.

Not everyone is or has a father. For some today is just a day to get shit done.

Just don't answer or acknowledge until business hours tomorrow.

Everyone I work with understands they can answer when it’s convenient for weekend/holiday emails and texts.

I do try to avoid texting/messaging down the chain.

But I also work in an environment that a lot is time sensitive and sometimes urgent. It’s across time zones and it’s already tomorrow in Australia.

We also have fully flexible schedules, including leave. So the time I work on a Sunday is offset by going on a bike ride on Wednesday.
