No not really since most days line up this is a new holiday and contractor companies are mid contract and haven't made the decision on it or can't yet. Not the same at all.
Most but not all, especially extra days that feds usually get and early dismissals

When I was consulting I only got paid when I worked. Xmas, 4th of July, vacation etc I don’t get paid.

Another former federal contractor here; Yep, I didn't get paid when the client doesn't work: holiday that my company didn't observe, government shutdown, snow (remember snow?).

Not every government contracting company. My old company would make it a proposal/other stuff day in the home office. It sucks and the solution is to find a better employer - the are a lot of federal contracting companies out there.

It's a very old holiday and lots of people celebrate it. What's new is that it is now a federal holiday.

This is the way it's been for as long as I can remember. Sure. "Keep asking how they are going to handle this..." and see how long you keep your job.
