In my experience, no one really cares about the reason however unless you're talking about really competitive grad school programs such as veterinary school, no one cares about a 3.0 GPA either.
I barely scraped together a 3.0 for my engineering undergrad after I lost a parent and then my scholarships and there was really no impact job wise or attending grad school later on.
