That assumes the PhD was in a relevant area.
I have two friends who are therapists with PhDs. Both did PhD in psychology, but their areas of specialty were very far from counseling. They later left academia and did whatever additional things you need to do to practice. So, yes, they did study psychology for many years, but as far as practicing therapists, they were as good as anyone with the same length of experience.
