My high school once had a drunk sub in chemistry class—the whole school was talking about it, and she was eventually pulled out of class. Turned out she was having a diabetic emergency and an ambulance had to be called.

So you’re right, it’s possible that could be the case here—would privacy restrictions prevent releasing that information to the public?

I mean, the principal sent an email home about the incident - I'm guessing the sub had the opportunity to say "Actually, I'm diabetic."

I have no tie to Magruder but it sounds like the system worked here. The drunk sub never got past the front desk, was not allowed to drive home, and parents were notified. I wouldn't have even assumed parent notification was necessary, given that the sub did not interact with students, but it's nice to see proactive communication from a high school.

I just hope that the sub recognizes this incident as his "rock bottom" and seeks help.

There goes my diabetes theory. As a sidenote, I didn’t know they could search your personal belongings.

They probably asked and the sub said yes. Or it was already visible. Seems like given the situation, it was handled pretty well. Sub didn't go beyond the main office, so minimal contact with students, and admin arranged a ride home/off-campus so there was no belligerent scene if he had refused to leave.

Seriously, the low pay for subs is a huuuuuuge issue. I walked into Lidl yesterday and there was a hiring sign with a starting wage of $17.50, and I bet there you even get a discount. It used to be a great gig for many people-- prospective teachers trying to get their foot in the door or exploring different grades/subjects, retired teachers who missed the classroom on occasion, SAHP who were teachers somewhere else and want a few days of work here and there with no commitment, SAHP who were never teachers but want the same thing, even immigrants with professional qualifications in their home countries but haven't landed permanent employment in the US yet. But now it's not worth the effort and trouble for only $19something an hour.

The county HAS to raise this wage--the shortage is real and students are directly affected.

Every time I hear the school mentioned, all I can do is think of the Saturday night live episode of MacGruber!

But that's off campus so doesn't affect the MCPS stats.

For all we know, the sub was an alien from Alpha Centauri, in disguise.
