Aggressiveness and assertiveness are important skills.

Coaches will tell you they’d rather have a player who makes 4 out of 12 shots rather than 2 out of 2. The player taking 12 shots is hunting shots and getting free for shots. Eventually he can be taught to shoot a higher percentage.

If your kid isn’t getting the ball, did he play defense and get steals? Did he rebound? And was he vocal as someone else mentioned?

It’s easy to blame a ball hog but being assertive is part of the game.

As far as the tryout process, the guys waiting to make the right play typically get left behind. That type of player likely needs a friend to put in a good word so coaches take the time to pay close attention.
