Black woman here and I disagree that most black people never heard of it.
Although, for sure no one cares about anyone swimming. In fact, that's what my kids will be doing that day.

These are 2 totally different things. A luau is appropriation and can be culturally insensitive.

Simply practicing on a day that is a holiday is not offensive/no more offensive then doing any other activity on a holiday.

I'm not AA but I do think it's offensive. Our swim club also hosts an annual "luau" that I think is offensive too.
