Because I travel too much to be able to commit to raising a litter. I take adult dogs as fosters as that works better for our situation, and puppies when I have no upcoming travel.

My friends that take in litters say that the mom does all the heavy lifting until the pups are weaned. The work for the foster starts at that point, but it’s only for another 3-4 weeks.

It’s tough out there. I volunteer with Big Fluffy Dog Rescue, and just yesterday, we had requests for 52 puppies that are in need. The rescue committed to the 8 that would have been euthanized on Friday. I hope the others find rescue commitments.

If they are desperate, she should at least be on the website.

For the people that don’t seem to know how rescues work - dogs that are pending intake are not posted by rescues publicly on their website. That implies that the dog is already under their care. They are often shared among existing fosters, in the hope of finding someone open to the dog.

They really should spay/abort the puppies now. The health care costs associated with the pregnancy and then the costs of the puppies will be astronomical. They are better off putting that money towards adoptable dogs. I hate what rescues in the DMV have become.

You are missing the money angle. Vet care and puppy care is reduced and donated, respectively.

Each puppy will bring in about $400-500 to the rescue, which will be used to help more dogs, pay for the physical kennel location, and pay for cleaning, vehicles, medications, sundries and managing the operation.

Shelters and rescues "benefit" from taking in pregnant strays as long as they can find fosters, to help oil the wheels of their activity.

And don't kid yourself that these dogs are getting top-notch care. When I foster pregnant dogs, there is no usually no vet care. They are seen by the tech coming off the truck (or possibly seen by a previous shelter's vet tech), passed on to me, then they give birth and are seen only for their spay post-partum. The puppies and mom get their shots/dewormers/preventatives with the tech, then they get adopted and vet visits are on the adopters. That's when everything goes well, and it usually does. The few times it doesn't, and the vet needs to intervene, don't cancel out all the profit they make off the well moms and puppies.

TIL rescue kennels are puppy mills with better PR.

Looks like a German Short Haired Pointer mix.

German Short Haired Pointers are great dogs. Very affectionate, playful, energetic, and intelligent.

The puppies will be amazing. Need a good sized yard in order to run & play.

This pretty, soon to be momma needs foster either this weekend or the latest Next wednesday ( earlier the better as she looks like about to have puppies now).
She is around 40lb pest to be 2yo Pointer/ Australian cattle dog mix maybe?? Very friendly and mellow with humans and dogs - no information on cats.
She was found wandering rural streets and nobody picked her up - so we don't know much about her history other than that she is super sweet and deserves home to give birth for the last time, not a shelter cage.

Fostering a pregnant and nursing mom is about a 6-8 week commitment - as we can only split the family up when the puppies are 6wo and eat on their own.
We can provide all the supplies and mentorship when needed!
Please let me know who can help her?
