The analysis is often done at the median level. So that dilutes the effect of outlier rich people.

Indeed.. the proportion of the wealthy is higher in the smaller states, but that also means they pay a lot more taxes proportionally.

In addition to MoCo, there are pockets of big wealth around Baltimore, Annapolis and Easton. Also, while HoCo and Anne Arundel are not super wealthy, there’s a big upper MC population in both which brings up the median.

And yet ... Maryland is still #1

Anyways, I don’t get how MD is always first in household income. How does it beat out Massachusetts, Connecticut, and California. Also some of the oil states like Texas and Alaska have a lot of wealth. I guess the rural counties in Virginia drag down the average wealth/income since Northern Virginia and the Richmond area are very rich.

Aside from Talbot County and parts of Ocean City, the Eastern Shore is quite poor. Salisbury and Cambridge are dumps.

I swear PG being “the wealthiest majority Black” county is a statement some white people push to distract the public. Who cares? What’s more important is that PG lags neighboring places like MoCo and Howard in terms of income, housing, crime, and economic development.

MoCo has stagnated and is slowly but inexorably in decline. Population and economic development/investment stats — especially relative to Fairfax — prove it.

Honest question: what actual social safety net do you get in MoCo for your taxes? What is something the government provides there that other localities don’t? Other than MCPS which is debatable and is its own animal.

Being a MoCo defector to Fairfax County, I think I can answer this question. In MoCo, I doubt they would allow a 2-foot wide high pressure gas pipeline to be relocated from a highway and jammed through a subdivision mere feet from your front door while county agencies wave a Dillon Rule flag and act all helpless.
