Grandma isn’t citing the very real and worrying statistics about Cape Town. She’s citing an issue halfway across the continent. That is OP’s annoyance.


Not a day goes by with my MIL calling to tell us how much she is worried about what is going on in Sudan and how unsafe “Africa” is.

News flash, a majority of homes throughout the continent are gated. That is the style of architecture. Look at homes in Ghana, Nigeria and other countries.

Cape Town is not that safe. I was there a couple of years ago and had an ex-military driver who basically body-guarded me the entire time. I was not allowed to walk outside in the street - he would pull up outside the building and I would exit directly into the car.

There aren’t any first world ie completely safe countries in Africa. Even N Africa is a cr*pshoot, sorry to say. I did visit Tunisia but only traveled around with local friends.

Not OP, but PP you just confirmed what OP was pointing out. The comparison to Americans not knowing that Sudan is worlds away from South Africa geographically is the same as someone in South Africa not knowing that Canada is incredibly far away from Mexico, not that Phoenix is far away from Atlanta. In many countries kids study world maps and world geography, and that is something we are a little weak on in the US.


DP, disagree. If MIL didn't know that Egypt and South Africa are far apart, that'd be comparable to the Mexico/Canada example. But expecting her to know where Tanzania is in relation to Chad is akin to asking an African to identify Illinois and Kentucky on a map

Most people in this world are massively ignorant about lots of things, you and me included. So it's not very nice of you to create a post solely to criticize your MIL about this, on this one instance you know more than she does.
