My best friend is visiting me for a weekend at a very inconvenient time. I don’t mind because I know how low maintenance she is, I can hand her the keys to my Jeep and send her off to the beach on her own for a few hours, she’ll help cook, clean up after herself, run the laundry, etc. If this was one of the trips where she asked to bring one of her friends with her, I’d decline. I don’t have the mental capacity with everything else going on to deal with an unknown.

It’s also rude to entirely cancel on short notice. The least cousin can do is pay for flight ticket that OP purchased.

This isn't having family over for dinner. This is hosting people for an extended time, which is a lot more work. And it's possible that something happened (ahealth issue, for example) that changed the calculus. Or your request was pusher or more preemptory than you thought.
