I love this thread! For my husband it’s pop tarts and McDonalds breakfast. When I’m trying to be healthy, I pack mandarins, string cheese and something like a Larabar (if the morning) or those Off the Eaten Path crisps (for later in the day). When I’m not feeling like being healthy, I throw m&ms (or another candy) and some sort of salty snack mix in as well. When my kids were young I always purchased prepackaged snacks and gave each of them their own bag of assorted items. Things like fruit snacks, goldfish, 100 calorie bags of cookies, zbars or granola bars, peanut butter crackers, raisins, etc. I divided them up so I didn’t have to dole them out or worry about them fighting over the “good stuff”. And we always stop somewhere for a meal like Panera, McDonalds, etc

A mixture of healthy (berries, clementines, grapes) and unhealthy (Pringles in different flavors). We always stop at a Popeyes and get tenders and/or the fried chicken sandwich, as well as DQ at a rest stop.

However, on the healthier side, I think it's best to pack fruits. You will feel better after hours of driving if you consume fruits instead of chips.
I really don't like to arrive at my destination feeling full and groggy and unpleasant. Those junk food does that to me.

I like to stop and have hearty meals. Not necessarily healthful meals, maybe a chicken sandwich but I’ll order fries. All that snacking makes you feel greasy and gross because you continue to snack way beyond hunger and still don’t feel satisfied.

I am boring - we drive up and down the East Coast several times a year. We pack a lunch - usually PB&J or cheese and apple. For snacks I pack carrots, cheese sticks and the little bags of Cape Cod trail mix from whole foods. Try to stay away from too much salty stuff because it makes me thirsty and then we have to stop more often to pee. Normally it's an 8-10 hour drive and we drive during the day and arrive by dinner so we don't need that much in the way of food.

Why?

It truly never occurs to me to buy them any other time. As soon as a road trip comes up, I hunt them down in the grocery store. I'm sure if they weren't for a "special" occasion, they'd just be run of the mill trash.

this is exactly how i feel about egg mcmuffins and peanut m&ms. They are my road trip snack foods, and yet it's like they don't exist at all other times.

Nothing with cheesy powder (Doritos, Cheetos, etc). They smell so bad in the car
