So sorry for your loss. The idea is sweet but old-fashioned, as most young men and women are not into that stuff nowadays.
I would see if mom and dad might allow you to contribute to his dorm supplies and give him money.
I think a quilt would be lovely later in his life.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I think at that age boys love food more than anything. A delicious care package would be wonderful. He might love the blanket, he might not. Agree with asking his mom.

I had a lot of medical appointments with my kids as infants and I remember after a terrible blood draw at children’s they gave us a special blanket from a stash of donations. I think it’s crocheted. I was so emotional that day and treasure the blanket (still have it). I am sure you can spread a lot of love and comfort with your skills!

My brother still has the blanket I crochet Mrs for him when he went off to college. He didn’t bring it to football games or anything but I think he took it to school and kept it on his bed. He’s 30 now.

Both of my sons like the knitted throws that my Mom made for them when they left for college. Or a least they did a really, really good job of pretending to all of these years.

I think it’s very nice and thoughtful. It’s something that you can put your time and effort and love into.

I'm so sorry for your loss OP.
I wanted to say that my DS went off to college last year and he took his favorite fleece/sherpa blanket for his dorm room. It looks like a knit pattern but it's fleece. So it's possible your nephew will appreciate it but better not to expect it. I can't see him bringing out a blanket in public either eg at a game but who knows? Maybe he and his friends will think it's cool.

Can you ask their parents if he might like it first? Otherwise, what about a fleece blanket—they’re not as intricate but there are some easy ones tk make and *that* shine can use in the dorm room, etc. i appreciate you!

Cookies or brownies would be better.

I think it's a very thoughtful gift, but boys just aren't into that. I'm a mom of 2 boys, 18 and 23. I would've had to force my boys to take a knitted blanket to school with them. Sorry. It's incredibly sweet of you to think of this, though.

I am sorry for your loss
My Mom, an avid knitter, has made blankets in school colors for all her grandchildren when they headed off to college, and they all appreciated them because of the family connection. My girls definitely use them in their rooms, not sure what my nephew does but he did appreciate the thought and effort.
If you do this for your nephew, maybe think about continuing it for your other nieces/nephews as well.
