It doesn't matter if you support it or not. It's against MCPS's own policy, so if it's happening to your child, you have every right to point out that it is not allowed.

Our teacher tried to do this earlier this year, until parents reached out to the teacher and pointed out the reg PP posted. Now the misbehaving kids have to miss lunch with friends and eat in the classroom with the teacher, but do go to recess with everyone.

It was absurd. The school told me a day and they did a week. But, my kid hated lunch and recess so they'd much prefer sitting in the office reading a book so it wasn't actually a punishment.

Thank you for posting this! I was trying to find policies earlier in the year and didn’t see anything in the code of conduct or other disciplinary documents. Now I know to look at the wellness policy

It seems to be important to make a distinction here between missing recess as a consequence of bad behavior in the classroom (not allowed). And giving a time-out during recess because of inappropriate behavior right there on the playground.

I don't know if the latter is allowed or not, but if a kid won't stop doing something dangerous (I could include throwing mulch at other kids as potentially dangerous) then pulling them out of that situation to sit on the blacktop seems appropriate to me.

It's common at our school. I think sometimes if the child tends to be the more active type parents can ask that the time (they don't call it detention but that's what it is) be served during lunch instead.

We've had incidents where staff was dismissive of my DC's concerns. When we brought these incidents up to the appropriate party, the issues were handled and haven't happened again.
