I don’t think families or teams want that, so it’s inevitable that some kids get spots right away and some kids get spots a little late, and some kids get spots right before the season starts. There will always be a good number of people holding each other’s tail waiting for someone to make a decision and commit to a spot or free it up.

Bernice delays committing to a spot on team cucumber because team radish hasn’t gotten back to her yet. And team radish is waiting for Cornelia to accept before letting Bernice have the spot. Meanwhile Cornelia wants a spot on team potato, who is waiting to hear back from Dorothy. And Dorothy hasn’t committed to team potato because she wants Bernice’s spot on team cucumber. It could go on forever.

You can call and say you have another offer and need a decision on their part. From your example, team radish may decide that Bernice is close enough and tell Cornelia she took too long, but the kid behind Bernice isn't getting the same consideration

It's pretty simple and straightforward - if the club tells you we'll get back to you in 2 days, and you haven't heard back in 2 days, then go ahead and assume your child did not make the team.

If they end up reaching out to you after the 2 days to welcome your child to the team, well, lucky you. Cause your child literally did not make the team, they literally choose other's over your kid. It's just a spot that wasn't intended for your child ended opening up.

Not sure why this is hard?

This is my experience as well. Going through it now - there are two tryout dates at this age group and the club said expect to hear within a week from the last tryout. So some kids will hear immediately and others within a few days.

For the kids who they care about getting, that will be the time frame. For the rest, your kid is replaceable and they'd like to get them, but it's not a big deal to them if they don't

So the message is "we only have to be honest if your kid is a star player" Got it.
Thank God my kid doesn't play for a league like that.

Don't be naive. They're all like that. All sports.

It's also just how the real world works. Think about job offers... if you don't hear back quickly it's because they're offering to their top candidate. Then if that person turns it down, on to the next one, and so on. Same with grad school admissions in certain highly competitive fields. It's good preparation for the reality of a competitive world.

They start with their best team, and invite their best players. As they accept or refuse they go down the list until that team is filled and then on to the next.

Your delay is the end result of every delay of better players above you.

Which is totally fine!
But then promise the kids that they will hear within a week, but talk to the top kids right away.
Making promises you can't keep to kids just sucks.
Act like a responsible grownup.

Our league requires a commitment from you within 24 hours, and promises that all kids will know within 3 days. I very much appreciate their clarity.

It the coach wants the kid, 24 hours becomes take your time pretty quickly

However they do it, they tell everyone within 3 days. So maybe they hang out for a superstar and just accept that they'll move kids later - I have no idea. But they keep their word to tell everyone within 3 days.

This. The turnaround times are requests, not deadlines.
