My brother calls our mother by her first name because he hates her and has no respect for her.

That’s usually how this works.

my kid calls me mom but I don't think I'd care if she called me by my first name.

I loved when they first called me mom/mama. They are the only ones who will ever do this. I'm going to hang on to it as long as I can. We call people by the name they prefer, and I prefer mom.

I'm pretty sure kids that call their parents by their first names are future serial killers. And I'm not joking

"Force?" What are you talking about? Millions of children have called their parents some version of mom and dad since the beginning of time. Are you forcing them to call you Barbie and Ken in order to appear younger and " cool?"

My son calls me by my very endearing nickname. I love it. Other child calls me mom.

My DCs usually call us Mom and Dad. If they wanted to call us by our first names I wouldn't have a problem with it. It wouldn't make me less of a parent or change how I parent them. I don't think it's disrespectful for a family member to call me by my name (even a younger family member). My main goal was just to make sure they knew our first names so they could find us if lost in a crowd or something.

It's hard to imagine my kids wanting to use our names. I'd probably gently steer them away from doing so if they tried. When I was a little kid, we had family friends and the kids called their parents by their first names. I though it was weird even then.

Each of my kids went through a phase in preschool, and again in elementary school, where they called us by our first names. It was cute, like they were trying on the idea of "mom" and "dad" being human people.

We didn't make a big deal about it and they lost interest after a week or so. Will probably do the same if it comes back in the teen years.

Alternatively, it's just a teenager thing. I think a lot of teenagers experiment with calling their parents by first names in an effort to establish themselves as an adult and therefore an equal.

Most of the time people go back to calling their parents mom and dad, once the teenage rebellion is over.

Some kids might continue to use first names as a sign of disrespect, but I'd argue that if your 17 or 18 year old does not respect you as a parent figure, that is likely more your fault than theirs.

I know a small number of kind of bohemian families where the adult kids use their parents first names some or even most of the time, but it's not a sign of disrespect, just another way of addressing each other. I don't get the sense the parents mind. These are all high functioning adults with good relationships with their parents.

I don't think this is a big deal.
