I’m a senior at a high school in the DMV area, and I am currently working on a project about bathroom safety in Montgomery County public schools. As you are probably aware, public schools such as BCC and Richard Montgomery have recently had overdosing and robbing incidents occur in the bathrooms. I am interested to hear the perspectives of you all, the parents, on this issue. Do any of you have children affected by it? I read that MCPS recently established a safety plan–is this plan working? What else do you think could be done to help increase bathroom safety?
Thank you!
No my kids are not affected by this. Given the size of the county, I'm surprised incidents like this don't happen more frequently, but still extremely rare. Kind of like getting struck by lightning so I'm not worried about it.
You are naive.
The bathrooms at Julius West middle school are so scary. Vaping, weed, pill popping, drug deals, bullying, vandalism, and fights.
Doesn’t get better at RM. 3rd floor bathrooms are currently on lockdown

At my kid's regular DCC HS and MS it isn't an issue.

I personally use the gender neutral restrooms -- not just because I'm queer, but because they're never locked.
Actually, my 13 yo was just offered a blunt this week by another kid in Damascus. Middle School. It's hearsay for me, but I have heard from other parents that the bathrooms at DHS are ones to avoid. Not sure why. Assuming vaping.
As a student I've only ever been offered drugs once -- a vape in Middle School. Kids use drugs in the bathroom, yes, but there's no pressure to partake, just irritating groups milling around in front of the urinals. Not saying it never happens, though.
