I’m a senior at a high school in the DMV area, and I am currently working on a project about bathroom safety in Montgomery County public schools. As you are probably aware, public schools such as BCC and Richard Montgomery have recently had overdosing and robbing incidents occur in the bathrooms. I am interested to hear the perspectives of you all, the parents, on this issue. Do any of you have children affected by it? I read that MCPS recently established a safety plan–is this plan working? What else do you think could be done to help increase bathroom safety?

Thank you!

No my kids are not affected by this. Given the size of the county, I'm surprised incidents like this don't happen more frequently, but still extremely rare. Kind of like getting struck by lightning so I'm not worried about it.

You are naive.

The bathrooms at Julius West middle school are so scary. Vaping, weed, pill popping, drug deals, bullying, vandalism, and fights.

Doesn’t get better at RM. 3rd floor bathrooms are currently on lockdown

Can you provide any hard evidence that the problem is severe or widespread? I mean sure there have been one or two widely publicized events but that doesn't mean much. These seem more like isolated incidents that are being hyped to create hysteria.

At my kid's regular DCC HS and MS it isn't an issue.

After reading all these posts about these bathroom issues here, I've asked my MS and HS kids about it, but both say it's pretty unremarkable. One said they saw a kid vape twice this past year, but nothing exciting compared to the DCUM version...

My kid at RM says taking the doors off the bathrooms made it all worse. Now people are going inside the stalls to use drugs so you can’t get a stall to pee/poop—have to hold it until open lunch.

Actually, my 13 yo was just offered a blunt this week by another kid in Damascus. Middle School. It's hearsay for me, but I have heard from other parents that the bathrooms at DHS are ones to avoid. Not sure why. Assuming vaping.

As a student I've only ever been offered drugs once -- a vape in Middle School. Kids use drugs in the bathroom, yes, but there's no pressure to partake, just irritating groups milling around in front of the urinals. Not saying it never happens, though.

The pressure would come from a peer or a friend. If someone you don't know, you are more likely to blow them off. I think though that it's more annoying to have kids smoking and having to be around that smoke. But then again, I am a product of the 90s and our bathrooms always smelled like cigarettes. So gross. But teachers at my school shut it down immediately and the kids def got a consequence. Today? I'm surprised there aren't vape vending machines in the bathrooms yet. SO many kids seem to have vapes somehow. It's insane. Next year will probably get a little intense after July with legal access.

And bathroom access is a health, equity and safety issue, especially for female students.

Which school is this? I thought most MCPS schools have been having bathroom issues. Which schools don’t?
