I go to Onelife. The gym in Bethesda has a pool. I'm not sure about the DC locations.

NP here who has been considering aqua-fitness classes. Thanks to all for the input and encouragement, especially about larger bodies. I'm going to give it a try.

PP here that said get after it. Saw the water class at my gym in crystal city the other day. All the older ladies were definitely getting after it. One guy my age (mid fourites) was kind of putting along and definitely not keeping up. The pool in the basement there is like 3.5 feet deep, which makes it sub-optimal for swimming but really great for water aquatics.

I love the pool at the Y Ijamsville and I am a lap swimmer as that is my cool down after running an hour but sometimes I chat with the oldies and the Xl'ers as PP called them. I am fit but not skinny. I am toned and can perform pretty well for 2 hour straight.

This is what I love about it. For most of them, you determine how much exercise you get. But they are fun.

Yes. I had an instructor I loved, but she stopped teaching and got replaced with a horrible teacher. My point it - try it. If you do not like it, try another. Because like any class, the instructor matters. Deep water ones do tend to be more intense.

Yes, you pretty much have to wear them.

OP. The pool at the gym is not deep - I’ve been there many times just for fun and it doesn’t go deeper than 4 1/2 ft.

OP,

I'm the first PP who got this thread going. One thing I've learned in my time at the pool (just started going last summer to heal my frozen shoulder, and re-taught myself to swim, and now I'm going twice a week for actual laps!)... I digress...

Anyway... the one thing I've learned by being at the pool is that nobody is worrying about their body shape, and most of the body shapes are saggy or XL. People at the pool are there for the exercise (at least at the gym lap pool). Surely there will be others who look JUST LIKE YOU. You might even feel better about yourself after seeing all the old bods at the pool!

It's really a place where people are no longer caring about how they look in their swimsuit... they are at an age where they accept the body for what it is, and they are trying to keep moving it.
