Sent our DD to one, she is emphatic that she will never allow that experience for her children.

I went to a British boarding school because the country my parents lived in had literally awful schools. After trying it out for 2 years, I went there at the age of 10.
At first I would cry for a week after going back to boarding school after a vacation which was 3 times a year; a month twice and 2-1/2 months for Summer.
Severe homesickness.
After that one week Inwould settle down and have fun with friends great teachers hang outs etc.
I am still friends with many and one is still my best friend to date. ( I am 54)

Having said that , would I send my son away to a boarding school - never.
I still missed being with family- good thing was I didnt stay there for more than 4 years.

My friend went to Roedean from age 12 to 14. It was obvious that she had a terrible experience. To this day she will not speak about what happened to her there.

I was thinking the same thing. Why would you bother having a kid, just to have someone else raise them at 10. That is the saddest thing I ever heard.

When I was a kid a very long time ago, I lived in Australia. My mom made friends with a British diplomat who had for kids who were like B7, G6, B5, and G4. The two boys attended boarding school in England. They would fly by themselves, which involved an overnight in an hotel in Hong Kong, I think there was some arrangement with flight attendants who would take care of them.

My mom heard this and was horrified. So, she told the mom it was sexist, and that if the schools in Australia were good enough for the girls, they were surely good enough for the boys.

The mom came back and thanked my mom and said she really appreciated the insight and she and her husband had had a long talk and of course my mom was right, so they were sending all 4.

My understanding is that English boarding schools no longer serve kids that young, and that 7 is usually the youngest age to start.

I am British and have several friends who attended boarding schools. I will say that none of them have chosen to send their own kids to boarding school.

This to me is so sad. I wish I could press pause on the years. OP it’s not about prestige and whatever would come from this boarding school. Love your child and keep him close! Nothing can replace family and time spent with one another

No. My brother shipped his son to boarding school when he was 12. I had to take him in last summer because he was so messed up.
