Some kids & adults have no other option

They can go to a trade school, community college, work at McDonalds, etc.
Lot of options

UDC is the only community college in DC. To say that it should be closed because people can go to community college is pretty clueless.

It is a sad, oily blot of failure on the map of higher education in the DC area. That is all.

This is a city where test-in schools were pressured to drop their tests and AP classes get canceled if their students are insufficiently diverse. You can't have an honors track in high school. There's no way there's any political will to create an honors college.

It’s unfortunate, could be like CUNY

UDC has a community college & nobody wants to work at McDonald’s for the rest of their life.

Maybe educate yourself on urban education & access before making such comments.

UDC has a trade school and CC component to it. It is what it is...I suppose admin could try to turn it into an institution that attracts non-DC residents, but it has no housing, nor many of the other trappings of state schools. Seems like a heavy, insurmountable lift to turn it into anything more than that quasi-community college that it is.

The law school lost their certification, has it been restored?

I know and work with people who have graduated from UDC with education degrees who cannot write a coherent sentence. I know people who have taught there and quit due to being pressured to lower their standards so much in order to pass people. It's such a shame for those who don't have other options and have to put up with a watered-down peer group.

The Urban Sustainability program is great. I was really surprised that it even existed, but one of the faculty told me it's because UDC was a land grant college, all of which are required to have some kind of agriculture-related program, and that's how they do it. They do really interesting work.

It’s more of a community college.

It's an open access institution, so yes these rates are not surprising. Students who apply to the main campus (in Van Ness) but who do not meet the academic standards are accepted to the community college (now at Bertie Backus). They can earn associates degrees and transfer to the main campus to finish a four year degree if they like. Many students want to and do just go to the CC. The average age of a n undergraduate UDC student is 29 so it really isn't a traditional undergraduate institution like GW, American, etc. UDC has not had a great reputation historically but it is improving and so are student outcomes. Some programs are strong (Urban Sustainability for sure) and most are average.

It's so much more affordable than any other university in the area. It also has very generous residency requirements so students can pay very little without having t have years of established DC or DMV residency.
