Why ?

Experience with hiring from those schools, experience working with people who graduated from those schools, seeing who excels and who doesn’t excel on the job. Who needs more or less hand-holding on the job.

At hiring time, I ignore the various theoretical rankings because they do not translate into more predictable outcomes in the workplace.

I would be interested in why you think that. I have noticed that WPI is not ranked very well for CS, across many different ranking entities. The consolidated Brown CS ranking has WPI at 105. I have been curious about that low ranking. And I know ranking doesn’t mean everything—but it might mean something.

Is it because WPI is a more undergrad-focused institution? I think it's an R2. Wouldn't do as well in measures of publications, etc.

Anonymous wrote:WPI has a very different academic program - 7 week terms, project based learning, etc. Tends to place quite well in the job market within New England anyway. If all that is good with you and the money's right, I'd go with WPI. If not that, Northeastern.

The terms at WPI are 8 weeks, and it is an open curriculum model too, so a lot of flexibility in course choices, though there is a 7-course humanities core, and lots of flexibility with that. And agree re: job market -- they rank very high on salary rankings that people post here. I saw one that said #6 and one said #19.

This matters, apparently advanced classes not offered outside Boston, and some sequences require fall start which hurts those coming in with AP credit.

No- global scholars but dc doesn’t have a lot of APs anyway

I personally would avoid global scholars, three different campuses in 18 months is too crazy.

Given all the information you’ve provided, I’d go with WPI, assuming your kid liked it.

If advanced classes are not offered at the other than Boston campuses, it does not matter, since the other than Boston campuses are first year only.

Also, for CS, advanced classes at the other Northeastern campuses aren't really an issue. Even with AP Comp Sci A, NEU might give you credit, but they don't have you skip required classes. They want all CS majors to take the same classes first year. These classes are offered through Global Scholars and are the same classes offered at the Boston campus. We have been researching this for my kid offered Global Scholars.

Whether three campuses in 18 months is too much is a student specific question. My kid took WPI off his list because of its location (but it is a good school!).

Whereas WPI has an open curriculum and you can take whatever CS classes you want, as long as you fulfill the requirements of 5 different "buckets" you have to choose from. You can also take whatever humanities you want--for example, my kid took 3 different history classes (one about European Women and Technology, one of the history of technology, and i don't recall the third one), a philosophy, and a writing class.

Not for op, but I know of others who turned down NUin as computer science majors because classes they wanted were not offered. I wouldn’t send my student to three different campuses when they could go to peer schools starting on the main campus from day one. For that reason, I’d chose WPI, with the nice bonus that it is also cheaper.
