OP also what about books you've read in the past that you have found comfort in? I go back to those sometimes, because they remind me of that.

For me though it's Lorrie Moore's Who willl Run the Frog Hospital and her short stories.

Also reach for funny books when I'm depressed. Faves are anything by Dave Sedaris or Bill Bryson.

GL OP!

Read Wool, Shift, and Dust - it's a trilogy. They have been made into a series on Apple TV+ called Silo but definitely read the books first!

Also, if you like Audible, listen to Project Hail Mary.

The funniest thing I ever read was Chapter 26 of James Herriott’s book the Lord God made them all. The chapter describes the vet’s misadventures the first time he tried to collect a sample from a bull for artificial insemination.

pp here

I should maybe clarify that particular, while delightful, is not fully representative of James Herriot. His books encompass a variety of experiences and emotions.

Oh that wild, was coming here to suggest The Bookshop on the Corner and see the PP just before beat me to it. I think it’s the perfect book for you, OP … it’s like a warm hug.

Music of the Bees - I found uplifting
Anything by Sarah Vowell if you like historical stuff

I normally don’t like romance but I found Jenny Colgan series to be fun. They are more about finding your niche. They are each stand alone stories, but there are some overlapping characters.
The Bookshop on the Corner
The Bookshop on the Shore
Five Hundred Miles from You
