I've had a basic fitbit knockoff from Amazon that was under $30 for a couple of years that connects to a phone app. The particular brand isn't on there any more, but there are similar ones that get decent reviews. The previous cheap Amazon one I had lasted 4 years, including a trip through the washing machine!

I would not get a fitbit. They are crap and break within a year.

Hi! OP here. Thanks for the advice. It took me a long time to finally buy the thing but I bought a Fitbit luxe finally for $50 from Facebook marketplace and I like it so far!
