We moved here from another state at the beginning of 2 school year ago. Both my kids (one NT, one ND) already served gifted program previously. First find a place, enrolled in neighborhood school, submited all the documents (including test that would be accepted here). The process was quick, I received the acceptance email in 2 days. It took us a week before my kids moved to centre school. I do not said it will be guarantee acceptance. Once you settled, there will be IEP transfer and school will re-evaluate and issue a new one. In my case, AAP works wonder for my NT kid, but not so much for my 2e. I heard a mixed story about 2e, some are happy and some are not. We should know what to expect as these kid is come with specific challenge. Good luck!

We were in your situation last year. We moved from Alexandria. Because we knew the school where our son was going to attend we called and spoke to the AART. She was great giving us very useful information. We decided to apply for fall screening instead of immediate placement. My son was found eligible and started receiving level IV services in January. I believe immediate placement is easier, I don’t think they ask for GBRS form. This is a form that the current teacher fill out for gifted behaviors.

New to FCPS you can apply for immediate placement over the summer. You put together a packet and email it in by August 2. https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/students-new-fcps

Thank you.

If your child qualifies for Level 4 services, you will have the option to access services in an AAP center that is matched with the elementary school in your catchment area. It’s determined by your address. You cannot “shop around” for a different placement. All schools are required to meet a child’s IEP, so there isn’t one school that is better than another. It’s just what the school has to do.

This is OP. The way I can shop around, though, is by choosing where to live, unless I’m misunderstanding something about the way the process works. We aren’t military. We would be moving over the summer. Deciding between Fairfax and Montgomery County. The neuropsych suggested a self contained gifted classroom for DD, and they don’t have that in APS. I can’t recall her IQ score but she’s in the 99th percentile. I obviously don’t want to go to the expense and inconvenience of moving, though, and then find out that she doesn’t qualify.

What grade is your daughter in? If 3rd or above, you will need to come with proof from Arlington that she is already receiving gifted services in order to go straight in. If 2nd or below, there is no gifted services in FCPS (other than some additional worksheets) so she'd be in gen ed.
