My grandmother was only 40 when her first grandchild was born. She had several by age 50.

I don't want grand kids.

I think 60s is ideal — young enough to be energetic and involved but old enough to be retired or on the way there while the grandkids are young. My parents were older when I had my kids; we’ll see if/when they give me grandkids.

My parents became grandparents in their mid to late 50s. I’m not sure it was ideal because they were both still working full time and were not local. They are much more involved with my sisters kids now, when they are in their 70s. They are local with them, retired and healthy.

My parents had all of their grandkids between ages 56-65. They were still working in the early years, but retired when the oldest were in elementary school, which was nice for having flexibility to work around the kids' schedules for visits. Still young and healthy enough to keep up with the youngsters. I had my kids at 28 & 31, so I'm hoping it works out similar for me!

My ILs were still having grandkids when they were in their late 70s. One passed away before the last grandkids were born, and the remaining one has a hard time doing anything with young kids anymore. They had a lot of good years with the oldest grandkids, but the differences between their relationship with the oldest grandkids and the youngest grandkids is striking.

OTOH, one of my cousins had 4 grandkids before he turned 40. Don't think I'd recommend that approach either.

60s is best.
