Perhaps the two white students didn't understand what they were doing or the origin of the song. But, it absolutely has a racist history. Read the lyrics and read about how its been used in history

Don't you remember, don't you know,
Don't you remember Cotton-eyed Joe?
Cotton-eyed Joe, Cotton-eyed Joe,
What did make you treat me so?
I'd 'a' been married forty year ago
Ef it had n't a-been for Cotton-eyed Joe!

Cotton-eyed Joe, Cotton-eyed Joe,
He was de nig dat sarved me so, —
Tuck my gal away fum me,
Carried her off to Tennessee.
I'd 'a' been married forty year ago
If it had n't a-been for Cotton-eyed Joe.

Hi's teeth was out an' his nose was flat,
His eyes was crossed, — but she did n't mind dat.
Kase he was tall, and berry slim,
An' so my gal she follered him.
I'd 'a' been married forty year ago
Ef it had n't a-been for Cotton-eyed Joe.

She was de prettiest gal to be found
Anywhar in de country round;
Her lips was red an' her eyes was bright,
Her skin was black but her teeth was white.
I'd 'a' been married forty year ago
Ef it had n't a-been for Cotton-eyed Joe.

Dat gal, she sho' had all my love,
An swore fum ne she'd never move,
But Joe hoodooed her, don't you see,
An' she run off wid him to Tennessee,
I'd 'a' been married forty years ago,
Ef it hadn't a-been for Cotton-eyed Joe.

Here is the issue. I doubt many people have ever read the whole song. I’ve only heard the first verse and I’m over 40.

No, here is the issue. White students took a video of a Black student and posted it with a racist song. You can try to excuse it with ignorance all you want, but those are the facts.

Why aren’t people willing to consider the possibility that the students knew EXACTLY what the song was about and made a very clear decision?

Racist stuff happens every single day. Intentional racist stuff. You want to find reasons why it couldn’t have been intentional instead of considering the much more likely scenario that it was absolutely intentional. Walls kids are smart. They know how to use the internet. But you’d rather believe that this was all just an innocent mistake because you don’t want to consider that smart white kids can also be vicious racists. It’s time to consider that possibility.

I can understand that and I suspect many don't know all the words or history. This incident is a learning opportunity. As a 50 year black parent at Walls, I knew immediately what it meant. But, i told my daughter to carry on and not get distracted.

The song they used is a very popular TikTok song.
It is unlikely the kids were thinking about the meaning of the song or making the connection to slavery.

Well, if it's on TikTok, it must be okay. "It's origins are a racist tune that utilises awful, racist stereotypes about Black people, who were enslaved in America when it was initially written."

Why hasn’t anyone named the song?

Cotton Eye Joe

Um if this is serious I’m gonna go with these kids had no clue…

Jesus. People will find ways to excuse white kids for anything.

NP here. No kids at walls, but I see the issue as the nonconsensual posting and if it was done to bully/mock. I’d have to agree that many kids wouldn’t make that connection on the song.

Well they just learned a very valuable lesson especially if their teammate asked them to delete it. Try telling your BS to the kid's mom about her Black son.

What that you can be smeared for doing nothing wrong? Unless there is more to this story, this thread is fake news.

Cotton Eyed Joe was own 8th inning tradition at Yankee Stadium for like 15 years. Unless something from the context implied racism, I would not assume the kids had any idea the song was considered racist.

well, here is a clueless adult then. as an excuse, I did not grow up in the US and moved here as an adult. I heard this song (if this is the song ) before, thought it was a funny country tune for dancing, i actually understood "where did you come from, Katmandu" so there's that. I have never heard this song discussed as a racist song so I am not totally sure kids would be aware. I dont' have kids at Walls, i have no idea what happened there, I have not seeing the video and if the kids walked out there must be a reason. however, saying that whoever uses this song on a video must be racist and aware of the history of the song is a little of a stretch

That's what they always do. The mass shooters were kids while Trayvon Martin was a man.
