OP, just for a little perspective, all my kids’ grandparents are dead, and my own Nana was an immigrant who worked as a domestic.

So, having a hard time empathizing with you here.

It's pretty common where I grew up but I always thought it sounded like banana.

My English speaking mother wanted to be called Nana. I was put off by the fact that my kids are half French, and in France nana means chick or broad or dame or mistress.

Plus the French have the cutest name for Grandma, “Mamie” which is sooooooo adorable and chic and not matronly !!! I know it’s grand mere but the diminutive of mamie is soooo cute.

Yesssss i hate what my sister has her kids call my dad!!! My kids call him Grandpa which is what we called both our grandparents and what my dad asked to be called!!! He was so excited to be Grandpa like his dad and like I said my kids are about 10 years older than my sisters kids so it’s been awhile. Now he’s really frail and elderly and her kids call him Paw Paw which is just weird and not our family culture at all and it’s annoying and not needed!

It should not be an issue. In DH's family, apparently the oldest grandchild named the grandparents, THEN that child's parent's took offense that the other grandchildren used that name, too.

And so it goes.

In my family (and every family I know), the oldest grandchild names the grandparents, and the rest of the grandchildren follow. No one looks for or finds offense.
